Reuters news agency on January 15 quoted a well-informed source confirming that social network TikTok is ready to completely shut down in the US from January 1.
Specifically, from January 19, devices trying to access TikTok in the US will receive a notification leading them to a separate website.
This website shows information about TikTok being Goverment The US banned TikTok from operating. In addition, TikTok also allows users to download all their data to their computers for personal storage.
The above plan will be implemented unless the US Supreme Court issues a ruling to suspend or completely reject the TikTok ban before January 19.
In April 4, the US government passed a security law requiring ByteDance – the Chinese company that owns TikTok – to divest from the country before the above date.
This means TikTok’s US operations need to be sold to another company, or else the social network will be “banned” in the US.
Since then, ByteDance and TikTok have maintained their opposition to the law and sued it in US courts. The case has now been accepted by the Supreme Court and is considered TikTok’s last hope.
However, TikTok’s planned shutdown from January 19 is considered by experts to be a relatively hasty move by this social network.
In fact, the security law only prohibits users from downloading the TikTok app from Apple and Google app stores. Devices that have already downloaded the app will still be able to use TikTok for a while.
ByteDance and TikTok have yet to comment on the closure plan.
