Bloody ‘bets’ on social networks

PK (Player Kill) is a feature on TikTok that allows livestreamers to compete with each other to see who gets the most likes and donations from viewers.

The two sides will often “make a bet” – a challenge that the loser will have to perform. This is also the source of strange actions, leading to many distorted things on social networks.

Please click my fingers, brothers and sisters. Thank you Tanze…, thank you PC… I’m so sorry. Thank you Cam, thank you Quyt… I’m so sorry… “.

That was the language spoken by a player named L., considered a “master” in the PK village, during the 5 minutes of each PK match. To the point that just mentioning this player, people immediately remember the word “fuck”.

The most dramatic parts of the match are probably when L. receives huge gifts from viewers, he will scream: “fuck”, or throw and smash the red plastic table and chairs – “props” that are almost indispensable in every PK match of L.

It can be seen that PK is essentially a “match” between the two viewer communities, because the side that spends the most money to give gifts to players wins. They compete to give as many likes to players by clicking on the screen and sending as many gifts as possible.

From roses, cakes… priced at 1 cent (the currency on TikTok is converted to about 200 VND with the value changing over time) to gifts worth tens, hundreds, thousands and at most tens of thousands of cents.

Gifts on TikTok can be converted into money, and the sound and visual effects every time a gift is released make PK matches more interesting – Photo taken from TikTok

Two expensive gift items to mention are TikTok Stars – Galaxy 39,999 coins and TikTok Universe – Universe 44,999 coins (currently converted to about 15 million VND according to Google).

Each time a huge gift appears, it will be accompanied by vivid and beautiful visual and sound effects that will create an exciting and dramatic atmosphere for PK matches.

So the player who receives the most “rain” of gifts, the Universe gift – TikTok’s most luxurious gift with a huge amount of money up to billions of VND converted from the points earned, will immediately become a hot topic of discussion.

The online community at that time was divided into two factions: the faction labeled “jealous” because of comments like: I don’t see anything interesting/ I don’t know what this person’s talent is/ It’s just a waste of time…

The second group, who “understand life better”, retorted: People also have to shout thanks until their throats are hoarse/ They don’t do anything to harm anyone, they don’t affect the youth/ He uses the money to do charity everywhere, helping life, what can you do or just sit there and criticize?/ If you criticize someone for not being talented, then try going live and see if anyone will support you? “…

Such PK matches can be temporarily called “rich” PK with the most dramatic element being the shower of gifts that makes both players and viewers exclaim at the awesomeness and generosity of the gift givers.

The converted value into money can be up to several hundred million dong, even billions of dong, making the gift giver the center of discussion in the online community.

There have been many “conspiracy theories” and controversies. Some people think that no one has the time to waste hundreds of millions of dollars like that, so this must be a trick by the players or the platform itself to stimulate other users.

Others say that for many rich people with excess money, that money is “just pocket change”, played for fun.

Countless arguments have been put forward but none of them have a basis for verification, which invisibly makes the amount of money behind PK matches become an even more interesting mystery.

PK makes a bet “pouring soy sauce”, showing off his body

It can be said that the flashy part of the PK matches with huge gifts mentioned above is the motivation for the rest of the PK world to move along with the desire to attract more viewers and one day there will be PK matches with rain of gifts.

With only a few viewers to a few dozen, a few hundred viewers in each match, the “poor” PK players who do not have rich backers to receive huge gifts try to attract viewers with the most bizarre “payback” scenes possible.

For this bet, you use tape to wrap salt around the back of your hand, punch it until it bleeds, then apply chili sauce. That is just 1 of 10 bets made by 2 accounts named banho… and nguyn.xuyn…

During the 10 PK rounds that took place in one evening of these 2 accounts, every time they made a bet, they had to “bleed” with salt and chili sauce, or drop melted candles into the wound.

Unfortunately for banho, this Tiktoker lost 9 consecutive bets and the positions to return bets were the elbow, knee, back of the hand… He returned bets so much that banho’s opponent was worried and wanted to stop PK because “there was no place left to return bets”.

More gentle than this match, other PK pairs have “lighter” bets: G hits a piece of ceramic on the thigh, drops a water bottle from a height of 20 centimeters/ This bet tapes the mouth, opens the lid of a liter and a half water bottle, puts the mouth of the bottle on the mouth for 2 minutes.

Drop a brick from a height of 20 centimeters onto the instep of the foot/ Drink half a bowl of sugar + half a bowl of salt, chew half a bowl of coarse salt…/ Stick a bottle cap on one ear, then hit the ear 20 times with a sandal…

Torture yourself just for views and points

Watching the “payback” scenes, viewers also have all kinds of reactions. Witnessing the bloody, tortured payback scenes, many viewers expressed concern: For a few views, points, you play so cruelly/ Play so cruelly?

But there are also quite a few “passerby teams” who are used to violent PK and become the ones who provoke: “That’s such a dirty bet. Pay it properly” when they see players pay the bet carelessly, not even getting punched until their hands bleed. Others calmly choose sides: “Let them lose again in the next match, pay the bet properly”.

Many people, when seeing players drinking two bottles of water, eating lemons… to pay the bet, think that this game is a waste of time and that players are behaving like children. Others commented: “I don’t understand what these nonsense games are for?”.
